How is vodka made, types of it and most common brands

Vodka is a clear, odorless, and flavorless spirit that is usually made from grain or potatoes. The process of making it involves several steps:

  1. Raw Materials: Vodka is typically made from grains such as wheat, corn, or rye, or from potatoes. The raw material is ground into a fine powder and mixed with water to create a mash;
  2. Fermentation: The mash is placed in a large container and left to ferment, during which time natural yeasts present in the mash convert the sugars into alcohol. The fermented mixture, called a “wash,” contains about 10-15% alcohol;
  3. Distillation: The wash is placed in a large still and heated until the alcohol vaporizes. The vapor is collected and cooled, which causes it to condense back into a liquid. This liquid, called “low wine,” contains about 20-30% alcohol;
  4. Purification: The low wine is purified through a process called rectification, which removes impurities and increases the alcohol content. The purified liquid is called “neutral spirit” and has an alcohol content of about 95%;
  5. Dilution and Flavoring: The neutral spirit is diluted with water to the desired strength, usually 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof). Some vodka brands may add small amounts of flavoring agents, such as herbs or fruit essences, to the vodka before bottling it.

After these steps are complete, the vodka is ready to be bottled and sold.

What is the difference between kinds of vodka?

There are many types of vodka, and the main difference between them is the raw material used to make them. Some common types of vodka include:

Created from grains such as wheat, corn, or rye. Grain vodka tends to have a smooth, neutral flavor and is popular in cocktails.

This type is made from potatoes and has a slightly sweet and earthy flavor. Potato vodka is often considered to be of higher quality than grain vodka.

This type is made from rye and has a spicy, robust flavor.

Wheat vodka is made from wheat and has a smooth, slightly sweet flavor.

Other factors that can affect the flavor include the distillation process and the addition of flavoring agents. Some brands may also use different methods of filtration, such as charcoal filtering or triple distillation, which can affect the final flavor of the vodka.

What are the most well known brands?

There are many brands available on the vodka store, and the most popular ones can vary depending on the region. Some of the most well-known and widely available vodka brands include:

Is it save to storage it for a long time?

Vodka does not expire and does not go bad, so it can be stored for an indefinite amount of time. It does not contain any ingredients that will spoil or go rancid, so it will not change in flavor or quality over time. However, vodka can lose some of its flavor and aroma if it is exposed to heat, light, or air for an extended period of time. To preserve the quality of your favorite drink, it is recommended to store it in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or a cabinet.

It is also important to seal the bottle tightly after each use to prevent air from entering the bottle and affecting the quality of it. If any spirit drink has been opened for an extended period of time and you notice a change in flavor or aroma, it is still safe to drink, but the quality may not be as good as it was when the bottle was first opened.

In general, vodka can be stored for a very long time without any negative effects on its quality or safety. However, if you have any concerns about the quality of it, it is always best to use your own judgment and discard it if it does not meet your standards.
