Update: Sadly the Union have now denied the rumours. Wealdstone Raider has been binned. VERSA will not be attending.

The Wealdstone Raider, 2014’s hit meme, is set to light up the Union’s termly ball.

A Night in Paris, the theme for 4th Week’s Union Ball, is one that most of us would take to mean elegance, sophistication, and class; their own blurb claims “The Oxford Union’s historic buildings will be transformed into the most elegant city in the world” and tells attendees to “prepare for an evening of indulgence.

A perfect setting, then, for the rumoured appearance of everyone’s favourite football fan, The Wealdstone Raider.

Compared to the standard vodka luges and silent discos of Oxford balls, the Raider would definitely be a breath of fresh air. Plastic pint glass in one hand, cigarette in the other, shouting abuse, the Raider really will bring an added touch of class to the promised elegance of the Union’s ball.

At a purported cost of around £900, the Union really is splashing the cash to ensure the evening is, ahem, *indulgent*. At VERSA, we always applaud bold ideas, and this really is a change from the standard champers and chocolates we usually expect from black-tie events.

The Wealdstone Raider has spent most of his time in the limelight touring the UK, appearing in dingy clubs who are desperate to attract customers. To be fair to him, he has donated a lot of money to charity, raised by his £2 fee per photo. Hopefully a photo will be included in the Union ball’s £55 ticket price.

When contacted, Union officials declined to confirm or deny the rumours but Union Secretary, Rob Harris, told VERSA “If you want some fun, the Union Ball will certainly give it ya!”

It’s certainly a left-field idea from the Union, but VERSA would take fun over theme every time…
